2008, Shanghai; 180x145x310cm, fiber glass
This sculpture is made in-situ with respect to the exhibition space. The Shanghai Gallery of Art has a special atrium with a church like scale. I borrowed a waif image from Zhang Leping’s comical figure San Mao. It is also the way the government recasts this figure to be a lucky boy. There is also a new San Mao standing in the promenade along the Bund for promoting an athletic event which is also recorded in the video The Bund. My San Mao sculpture is a form of spiritual support. Who can be the angel then? Only people living in reality can bear such huge wings.
